商品簡介 |
A Sense of Place tells the story of the area west of Pottinger Street on Hong Kong Island in words and pictures. We see how an immigrant society, denied equal treatment and access to colonial institutions, began to create its own organizations that provided ladders of opportunity to social recognition, power and respect. Much of what happened to make Hong Kong what it is today happened in this area. It is not a story of the great and the good but of ordinary people, vernacular architecture and the social and economic institutions around them, including trading companies, temples, brothels, hospitals and educational establishments.
This book consists of two parts: a series of essays on the history and development of the area, and a selection of photographs taken in the mid-1970s which captured an environment and a way of life that have passed into memory. Its publication is sponsored by the Royal Asiatic Society, Hong Kong branch.
