The 1916 global commemorations of the three-hundredth anniversary of Shakespeare's death responded to imperial and national identity crises during the First World War. This study juxtaposes patriotic uses of Shakespeare with decentralising, racially and socially empowering voices, illuminating Shakespeare's legacies in modern politics.
