Observation: The shape of this flower will tell you what species it is. ‧ The bell-shaped flower is just over 1 cm long. It is usually pink or red at the base, and white around its edges - which usually curl outward. It is a deciduous shrub, usually around 2 m tall. ‧ It is widely distributed in Hong Kong, for example at Quarry Bay, Victoria Peak and Repulse Bay on Hong Kong Island; Ma On Shan and Pat Sin Leng in the New Territories and at Wong Lung Hang and Tai Fung Au on Lantau Island. ‧ It usually flowers in February, around Chinese New Year time. Traditionally, local Chinese consider that it brings good luck and fortune - and therefore it used to be sold in the Chinese New Year flower markets. Because of this, its wild populations in Hong Kong were threatened, and so the Government listed it as a protected species under the Forests and Countryside Ordinance Cap. 96. As a result, its wild populations are gradually recovering. So, if you come across these lovely flowers in the countryside - do not pick them. 8 February, 2001 Ma On Shan Country Park |
