1897年,政府授權香港九龍碼頭貨倉有限公司 (九龍倉) 在九龍區部份道路上鋪設電車路軌,但此電車路只供該公司運送和處理貨物,不能載客。1904年,載客電車在港島啟用後,運作十分成央A促使香港電車公司多次向政府申請在九龍提供電車服務。可惜,最後政府以九龍半島行駛“載客自由車”(巴士) 較適合為理由,否決電車公司的申請。
本書旨在描述1910年代擬定的九龍電車路線所經的區域,包括“英屬九龍”的尖沙咀、油麻地、何文田、旺角和大角咀,以及“華界九龍”轄下的深水?、長沙灣、荔枝角、九龍塘、九龍城、土瓜灣及紅磡。此外,還包括早期尚未開發的牛池灣、黃大仙、牛頭角、觀塘、油塘、鯉魚門、調景嶺,以及現正迅速發展的新市鎮將軍澳等。近年來,九龍以至新九龍的發展一日千里。整個地區,包括將軍澳新市鎮,均設有或將設有電氣化的地下鐵路及鐵路。實際上,它們是現代化的電車路。本書採用文獻、報章、歷史書籍的資料,並配合照片,讓讀者穿越時光隧道,緬懷昔日的九龍“電車路”風光。
In 1897, the Hong Kong government authorized the Hongkong & Kowloon Wharf Godown Company Limited to construct a tramway in Kowloon. It was constructed for transporting cargo, not passengers. The success of passenger-carrying trams on Hong Kong Island which had been in operation since 1904, had encouraged the Hong Kong Tramway Limited to ask the Government for permission to establish tramlines for passenger-carrying trams in Kowloon. However, the government rejected the proposal arguing that buses would be a better form of public transport.
This book focuses on the regions of Kowloon where tramways were proposed to be constructed in the 1910s. This includes the parts of Kowloon which were owned by the Colonial Government, such as the districts of Tsim Sha Tsui, Yau Ma Tei, Ho Man Tin, Mong Kok and Tai Kok Tsui, as well as the areas of Kowloon which were owned by the Chinese Government, such as Sham Shrr... |
