To the viewer, finished works are the sum of the artist; to the artist, however, they represent the ultimate product of an intense ? and often painful ? process of evolution, exploration and reconsideration. In this book, Dr Victor Lai ? the artist behind such acclaimed collections as Brothers, I Dream about China, New York 9.11, Landscapes and Sichuan 5.12 ? provides a rare peek at the countless sketches and drawings that have underpinned his renowned works in the past two decades. By revealing these ?works behind the works?, the artist draws the reader even more closely into his world ? his habits of observation, perception, and the internal and external events and influences that have developed a wholly unique means of expression.
