This publication proceeds from a Forum on "The Indian and Chinese Diasporas: Comparative Perspectives" in 2000, which was the first of its kind to specifically focus on a comparison of the diverse experiences of the Indian and Chinese Diasporas, as well as to suggest ways for scholars and business community to benefit from mutual engagement of ideas. One of its most interesting features emerged in the form of a collective reflection on the methodological approach to a comparative study of the Indian and Chinese Diasporas. It appeared clearly that academic fences which hinder interdisciplinary debate needed to be crossed, while detailed and concrete examples were necessary to inform a comprehensive analysis of these complex phenomena. To give furtherinsights into our comparative study of the Indian and Chinese Diasporas, two specialists – Dr. Rajeswari Brown and Professor Sucheta Mazumdar – were invited to contribute a piece to this volume.
