Dating from the 1930s to the 1980s, the paintings are visually evocative of the experimental marriage of East and West that was the life and art of Lin Fengmian. They include still lifes, landscape paintings, scenes from everyday life, as well as some examples of his paintings of Chinese opera performers. There will also be a diverse selection of his spare and elegant Modigliani-like paintings of Chinese women, for which Lin is perhaps best known.
There can be few artists that embody the spirit of East-West artistic and cultural exploration better than Lin Fengmian. He was active at a time when the world was heady with the pursuit of all things Modern, resulting in a rich and varied body of work. The talent of this Guangdong-born artist was recognised when he was still only a child. However, it was his training in France that propelled Lin to develop a truly new form of expression. He combined media and techniques from his artistic training in both China and France to create harmonious and pleasing compositions that expanded the boundaries of what had previously been achieved. Lin used colour in a bold and unabashed manner, even in his more traditionally Chinese-style paintings. Yet he also injected Chinese ideas of surface plane and perspective into his western media works, blurring the lines between these grand artistic traditions.
