This volume contains the principal papers presented at a Sectoral Meeting of Experts and Policy Makers on Energy-Environment Strategies for Urban Transport Systems held at the University of Hong Kong in May 1994. The meeting was organised by the Centre of Urban Planning and Environmental Management of the University of Hong Kong on behalf of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. The meeting represented an activity in the Programme for Asian Cooperation on Energy and the Environment (PACE-E) funded by the United Nations Development Programme.
The objective of the meeting was to explore policy options to enhance the energy efficiency of urban transport systems and to reduce their impact on the quality of the urban environment. Eight city papers were presented and reviewed in detail in the meeting. The selected cities were Bangkok, Beijing, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Seoul and Singapore. The edited city papers formed the basis for this volume.
