Nature has deteriorated and climate change is inevitable. The environmental problems faced by the transport sector, especially the emissions of greenhouse gasses, are rising with shocking speed. Railway transport produces carbon emissions at all stages, from design and construction through operation and maintenance to recycling. The author of Investigation of the Silk Road Economic Belt Initiative conducted a new investigation into decarbonisation of the railway industry. There are many ways to decarbonise the railway industry, but the highest level in decarbonisation can be achieved through technological improvements, using renewable energy and reducing the volume of raw materials that is used by railways. There is a need to balance on one hand the increase in decarbonisation but on the other hand not to further deteriorate the environment. With the right approach, the decarbonisation of railways will boost efficient use of natural resources, protect the environment, and support the growth of the economy based on low carbon technologies.
