Marryat wrote this 1841 novel for his children, who requested a sequel to Wysss Swiss Family Robinson. The father tried to oblige with the original tale about a family shipwrecked on a desert island, but protected by a wise old sailor. Recalling Defoes Robinson Crusoe, it also offers an honest critique of imperialism.
